Pannu: Pesticide cut led to Rs 355-cr savings

The Tandrust Punjab Mission has successfully managed to curtail the unwanted usage of agro chemicals in the state, resulting in a savings worth Rs 355 crore on the farming input costs, informed KS Pannu, director, Tandrust Punjab Mission.

He said the average consumption of pesticides during the kharif season-2018 had been 3,838 MT technical grade, which costs over Rs 2,000 crore. However, during the kharif season-2019 there has been on an average 35 per cent reduction in the usage of insecticides/pesticides. It includes the reduction in the use of weedicide and fungicide. However, decrease in pesticide usage alone is about 18 per cent, which amounts to nearly 675 MT technical grade.

This sizable reduction inthe consumption of insecticides/ pesticides has led to saving of Rs 355 crore at the level of farmers, he added. Crediting the achievement to sustained awareness campaign under Tandrust Punjab Mission, launched by Capt Amarinder Singh, he informed that numerous awareness camps, seminars and workshops had been organised in every nook and corner of the state by the officials of the Agriculture Department to sensitise the farmers on checking the unwanted use of pesticides.
