The Western Disturbance (WD) currently affecting the north-western parts of the country will intensify further with fresh moisture feed from the Arabian Sea from tomorrow, the IMD said on Sunday.
Private forecaster Skymet added that maximum temperatures will see a drop over Punjab by January 7, leading to intensifying of the cold day conditions there and neighbouring Haryana.From January 7/8, Delhi will also witness a drop in temperatures and commencement of cold wave conditions.
After the passage of this weather phase around January 9, after rains reduce and weather starts clearing up, icy cold winds from the Western Himalayas will begin blowing over plains.
From January 9, minimum temperatures over west Punjab, Haryana and north Rajasthan will start dropping.
Delhi will also see significant drop in the minimum temperature from about seven to eight degree C to four degree C, resulting in cold day and cold wave conditions, it said.
According to the IMD, an induced cyclonic circulation will form over southwest Rajasthan and neighbourhood by January 7.
Under its influence, light/moderate/fairly widespread to widespread rain/snow will occur over most parts of the Western Himalayan Region between January 6 and 8 with isolated heavy falls over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Under the influence of WD and its induced circulation, scattered to fairly widespread rain will occur over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, north Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh from January 6 to 8 with possibility of isolated heavy falls over northwest Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.
Isolated thunderstorm and lightning accompanied with hailstorm can also be expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, north Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh in this period.
While good rains will be seen over most parts of northwest, Delhi is expected to see patchy scattered rainfall between night of January 6 and 8, as per the Skymet.
Meanwhile, due to cloud cover along with rainfall activities, maximum temperatures will drop over Punjab by January 7, which could lead to the commencement of cold day conditions over the state along with Haryana.
Temperatures will also drop over Delhi and northern parts of Rajasthan resulting in cold day conditions over isolated pockets.
