Bajra or pearl millet is widely grown millet in the world. It can tolerate drought, thats why it is well adopted in region of scanty rainfall. India is largest producer of Bajra. Along with human consumption, it is used for fodder purpose, its stalk is used to feed animals. Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, UP, Haryana, MP, Karnataka, AP and Tamilnadu are major Pearl millet growing areas in India.
Uttar pradesh produces near about 9lakh ton (2002-03) of bajara. Mathura, Kanpur, Agra, Allahbad, Farrukhabad, Aligarh, Moradabad, Etah, Badaun, Bulandshahar, Shahjahanpur, Ghazipur, Mainpuri, Pratapgarh are major bajra producing areas of UP. Previously, area under bajra cultivation was decreasing but considering its nutritional benefits, recently farmer giving preference to bajra sowing.
