Land Preparation

Its cultivation is mostly done in low rainfall or water scarcity areas where other crops fails to grow or gives lower yield. After harvesting of previous kharif crop, if sufficient moisture is present in soil then take light ploughing. Remove weed and stubbles from field.

Sowing

Time of sowing
If sufficient soil moisture present in soil, complete sowing from 15 October to 30 November.

Spacing
For sowing, use row to row spacing of 45cm and Plant to plant spacing of 10-15cm.

Sowing Depth
To ensure good germination, Sow seeds at depth of 4-5cm.

Method of Sowing
For sowing line sowing method is used and drill method is used.

Seed

Seed Rate
For sowing one acre land seed rate of 1.5-2kg is sufficient.

Seed Treatment
Before sowing, treat seeds with Mancozeb@2gm/kg of seeds or Thiram or Captan@2.5gm per kg of seeds. It will protect seeds from fungal infection.

Fertilizer

Fertilizer Requirement (kg/acre)

UREA SSP
MOP
30 40 -

Nutrient Requirement (kg/acre)

NITROGEN PHOSHPORUS POTASH
12 6 -

Apply fertilizer dose of Nitrogen@12kg and Phosphorus@6kg per acre in form of Urea@30kg/acre and SSP@ 40kg/acre. Apply whole dose of Nitrogen and Phosphorus at time of sowing.

Irrigation

If irrigation facility is available, apply first irrigation on 40-45days after sowing i.e before flowering and second irrigation at time of pod formation.

Weed Control

To keep check on weeds, do frequent weeding, hoeing operations. Carry out first weeding, 20-25 days after sowing. Carry out thinning operation 8-10 days after sowing and maintain plant to plant distance of 10-15cm.

Plant protection

Aphids
  • Pest and their control:

Aphid: They suck sap from the leaf. They excrete honey like substance and developed sooty mould.
To control take spray of Diamethoate 30EC@200ml/acre. If necessary repeat spray with interval of 10-15 days. Take spray of Thiamethoxam 25WG@40gm/acre. If necessary take second spray of it.

Blight and Downy Mildew

Blight and Downy Mildew: If infestation is observed in field, take spray of Mancozeb@2gm/Ltr of water. If necessary, take second spray 20days after first spray.

Harvesting

When plant sheds its leaves and pod changes its color to yellow, is right time for harvesting. Harvest crop with sickle. Do not delay in harvesting as it will lead to shattering loss.

Post-Harvest

Cleaned seed must be dried in the sun for four to five days. After proper drying of seeds, stored seeds in gunny bags or bin.
