This time, instead of Basmati 370, new varieties 123 and 138 will be produced. This will double the income of the farmers. Till now farmers were growing Basmati 370. The crop is being grown since independence. This did not increase the income significantly. Research on new variety of rice was done at SKAST Jammu and new varieties were launched. Now the seeds are being provided to the farmers through Scast J. The Agriculture Department has also asked the farmers to take up new varieties of cultivation. The specialty of the new variety is that 45 to 50 kg yield is given in one hectare, whereas Basmati, which is already being grown, yields only around 30 kg in one hectare. Increase in production will increase income. The special thing is that Basmati is fragrant. Delicious to eat. It will also have a special demand in the markets.

Basmati was being sold in 370 markets for 100 to 110 rupees per kg. Now Basmati of the new variety will also be available in the markets from the month of October.

The seeds have been distributed to the farmers. Now the seeding work will start.

At the same time, the Basmati crop will be ready within 90 days. Earlier it used to take 120 to 150 days for the crop to ripen.

Basmati of the new variety will grow in the fields. Seeds have been provided. Sowing is being done in university farms for five years. Its yield is high. This time farmers will benefit- JP Sharma, Research Director, SCAST Jammu
