Moments of joy after 18 years:  Harvesting begins ahead of international border fencing

May 03 2021

Harvesting of the crop sown after 18 years has been started in the fields ahead of the barricade on the International Border (IB) in Hiranagar sector of Kathua district. In the presence of District Deputy Commissioner Rahul Yadav, with the cooperation of the Border Security Force, the work of harvesting wheat crop on 90 acres of land was started from Maniyari village in front of the barricades. In 2002, due to the tense atmosphere created by heavy shelling by Pakistan on the international border, farmers stopped farming on the lands ahead of the barricade.

In order to motivate the farmers to cultivate here again, on 25 September last year, the then DC OP Bhagat met the BSF officials and sought cooperation in preparing the land ahead of the Tarabandi.

After this the BSF started the work of preparing this land for cultivation and in November the wheat seed was provided by the Agriculture Department. Now the harvesting work has been started by the administration in collaboration with the BSF. A Combine has been installed for harvesting, which will work in fixed time of the day. Due to this, the work of harvesting will last a few days.

The District Deputy Commissioner said that it is a happy moment for the border farmers that the crop on their land is being harvested today. The first crop administration was established here to motivate farmers to cultivate here. This has been made possible with the coordination of the Department of Agriculture and the BSF. Now farmers can handle their fields themselves.

They will also have full security from the BSF. The administration will also support them fully. If the farmers here work together with the administration, the yield will surely be better. BSF CO Satyendra Giri, Chief Agriculture Officer Vijay Kumar Upadhyay, Chief Agricultural Officer in-charge Raju Mahajan, SDM Rakesh Sharma were also present on the occasion.
