Farmers upset due to Corona curfew, tomatoes rotting in fields, not getting fair price

Tomato cultivation in Shamli district is done on 15 hectares in Shamli and Thanabhavan areas. For the last two years, even after the tomato crop is good, the prices are not getting proper. Before the Corona curfew, tomatoes were being sold for 20-25 rupees a kg in mandis. Tomato prices have come down after the Corona curfew was imposed in the month of May. Due to which farmers growing tomatoes are frustrated. 

Praveen Kumar Saini, the commissioner of Shamli mandi, said that Azadpur mandi farmers are not taking tomatoes due to Corona curfew in Delhi. Tomatoes are not being picked up by retailers in the market. Gaushalas located in the mandi are being sent to avoid spoilage of tomato of large brokers.

Saurabh Saini, a tomato farmer on Hasanpur Luhari Road in Jalalabad region, told that farmers who have been under lockdown for the last two years are getting lower prices of tomatoes.

A bigha cultivation of tomatoes costs between Rs 12 thousand and Rs 15 thousand, but due to the low price, there is no availability of tomato mowing. He takes tomatoes for sale in the mandis of Thanabhavan, Charathaval, Saharanpur. Mandi is selling in rupees one and a half rupees to three rupees.
