Farmers upset by bad litchi crop in Muzaffarpur, demand for subsidy from government

March 18 2021

Litchi is the most cultivated area in Muzaffarpur in Bihar as compared to other states of the country, but this year there is a possibility that the production of litchi is low. In fact, the farmers cultivating litchi fear the weather hitting their crops. The adverse weather conditions have caused farmers in trouble in Bihar s Muzaffarpur district due to poor litchi crop this year. The litchi cultivators in the district were expecting a bumper crop this season, but considering the weather patterns, they fear that this time there will be a low yield of litchi. He is also afraid that due to crop shortage, there may be a shortage of this fruit all over the country.

Ritesh Kumar, a farmer, said, Last year we had to face lockdown and natural calamity, due to which the crop got spoiled and we suffered heavy losses. Lychee farmers are in a lot of trouble. Another farmer Dharmendra Sawhney said, "Last year we suffered heavy losses due to lockdown and this year the weather could disrupt production." The farmers also mentioned that it would have been better if there was a provision of some subsidy or compensation amount for the crops damaged by the government.

Director of Muzaffarpur lychee research, Dr. SD Pandey said that farmers need not be disturbed. There is less blossom on litchi crop this year than every year but due to the weather there will be no damage to the crop. Due to the lack of blossom, the problem of decreasing the yield of litchi is also in some special areas. Farmers are afraid that in areas where there is less on the lychee crop, how will the people compensate for the loss from their crop. One, the crop is already low, and if the seasonal troubles like thunderstorms, hurricanes and hailstones have to be faced then the farmer will be completely ruined.
