Bids for this apple started at Rs 2500 on PFC firm in Solan Mandi and finally the apple was sold at Rs 4000 per box.
Dimple Panjata, President, Himalayan Society for Horticulture and Agriculture Development Himachal Pradesh said that there are 15 to 20 varieties of Red Delicious in his garden including Scarlet, King Rot, Jeromene, Red Blocks, Super Chief, Red Cane, Red Chief. Gardeners are incurring losses in the blind race of varieties. Every year a new variety comes in the market and gardeners use it in their garden, whereas in the market buyers buy apple after seeing its color red, yellow and green. However, depending on the height, the variety can be selected for low, medium and high altitude areas. Therefore, before selling apples, he mixes all the varieties and fills the boxes.
