Vet Varsity Conducts Trainings to Promote Aquaculture Technologies of Regional Importance

Three days training on ‘Best Management Practices for Shrimp Farming in inland saline areas’ was conducted on demand at College of Fisheries (COF), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana for 20 fish/shrimp farmers from Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. Dr. Prabjeet Singh, Course Coordinator said that Shrimp farming in salt affected degraded lands has revolutionized aquaculture expansion in the north-western region of the country, with a huge profit margin of 3-5 lakh/ acre in 100-120 days.
University is promoting different aquaculture technologies for utilization of fresh and saline water resources. Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dean, COF Informed that awareness and capacity building programs are regularly conducted by the university to educate the stakeholders to expand aquaculture activities.
Further, one-day training on ‘Pangas Catfish Farming and Processing’ was conducted at the demonstration unit established by the university at its Regional Research and Training Center, Talwara, under RKVY project. 27 aspiring farmers were apprised of the added advantage of pangas farming, offering three times higher productivity/profitability, said Course Coordinator Dr. S. N. Datta.
Another group of 27 farmers acquired practical skills in ‘Carp Culture’ during a 5-days training program at COF. Carps are the most cultured fish species, contributing more than 85% to total production from the freshwater aquaculture sector and offering higher income than traditional wheat-paddy crop rotation,informed Course Coordinator Dr. VaneetInder Kaur.
Dr. J.PS. Gill, Director Research and Dr. Parkash Singh Brar, Director Extension Education, GADVASU, impressed on importance of such programs in developing entrepreneurial confidence among trainees. Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU also endorsed that the effective ‘Lab to Land’ program of the university is playing a vital role in successful adoption of innovative technologies at the farm level.
