New variety of Arhar prepared in Gwalior will increase income of farmers of South India

February 17 2021

Due to climate change, the production of pulses is gradually increasing in the states of South India. This is the reason that agronomists are now working on pulses crops that are compatible with the environment of these states. Scientists of Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Agricultural University, Gwalior have prepared a new variety of tur (arhar). This will increase the production of farmers of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu by 15 percent. Their income will also increase.

The specialty of this type of pigeonpea is that it has high immunity. It has been notified from the government level. The university has prepared its breeder seed. There is a plan to make Aadhaar seed available to farmers by 2022-23. The university has named this variety RVA-19. According to agronomists, the cold in South India is less.

Even in the summer season, the temperature is also 40-42 degrees Celsius, so there is less possibility of frost and damage to the crop due to excess heat. Director of Agriculture Extension Department MP Singh says that the variety RVA-19, prepared at the Sehore Center of the University, has more ability to fight diseases like Uktha, Yellow Mosaic. This will provide relief to the farmer from using pesticides on crops.

Pulses production increases in black soil

Black soil is more suitable for pulses, as it contains more nutrients. Black soil is found in most places in the fields of southern states. Not only this, there is no frost due to not being too cold. Due to this, the production of pigeon per hectare (20 to 25 quintals) will increase by 15 percent.

Disease resistant people will say that whatever variety is being prepared now, disease resistance is developed in them. Two things are taken care of while preparing any variety. First, crop protection against diseases and second, yields should be ten percent more than the earlier varieties.

Say them

The consumption of pulses of tur in the country is considerable, hence the production of pulses crops is being encouraged. Our scientists have designed Tuar variety RVA-19. The climate and soil of the states of South India are more favorable for this variety. -Dr. SK Rao, Vice Chancellor, Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Agricultural University, Gwalior
