Farmers shocked in Corona period, potato seed cost 40%

December 11 2020

Himachal Agriculture Department has started distributing potato seeds to the farmers of sub-division Sangrah. 800 bags will be distributed to farmers in areas like Sangrah, Nauhra Dhar, Haripur Dhar and Andheri. The packing of 50 kg per bag has been fixed at Rs 2450. This seed of BSC Lahaul-Spiti is being given to the farmers by the department on grant money. Potato seed is getting about 40 per cent more expensive this year compared to last year.

Local seedlings are getting the same seed in the market at Rs 3200 per bag. It may be noted that potato sowing is done on a large scale in the Nauradhar region. Majority: Potato is produced on behalf of farmers in Panchayats like Nauradhar, Devamanal, Chauras, Ghanduri and Lanacheta etc. Due to this only four hundred bags are being distributed by the Agriculture Department in Nauradhar Panchayat. This year, farmers are getting 40 percent costlier seed than last year, due to which farmers are also feeling disappointed.

Progressive farmers Sanjay, Atmaram, Prithvi Singh, Jaipal Chauhan, Atar Singh, Gopal Singh, Padam Singh, etc., said that this time the prices of potato crops were reasonable, but this year there is a possibility of less sowing due to expensive seeds. He said that subsidy is being received on potato but due to expensive seed farmers have to pay big amount. Expert of Agriculture Department, Dr. Anoop Bhatna said that seeds are being distributed to farmers this week at Nauradhar Agriculture Center. Farmers can come here and take seeds.
