Due to the ill effects of paddy crops, the groundwater level has been falling continuously for 50 years

July 08 2021

Paddy crops have adversely affected groundwater. The groundwater level has been depleting continuously for the last 50 years. This shocking disclosure was made by IIT s senior scientist Prof. Rajiv Sinha in his research. At the same time, it has been reported that if proper strategy is not prepared for groundwater management soon, then the situation can become uncontrollable.

Under the guidance of Ministry of Earth Sciences and Central Ground Water Board, Senior Scientist of IIT Prof. Under the supervision of Rajiv Sinha and PhD Scholars Dr. Sunil Kumar Joshi, the team studied the groundwater level in Punjab and Haryana.

Pro. According to Sinha, the area under paddy cultivation in Haryana was 192,000 hectares in the year 1966-67, which increased to 1422,000 hectares in the year 2017-18. Similarly, the paddy area under paddy in Punjab was 227,000 hectares in the year 1966-67, which has increased to 3064,000 hectares in the year 2017-18.

Now groundwater is being rapidly absorbed to meet the agricultural demand. The maximum decline has occurred in Kurukshetra, Patiala and Fatehabad districts and Panipat and Karnal. Pro. According to Sinha, this fate is not only in Punjab and Haryana, but also in the Ganga-bank districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Pro. Sinha suggested that instead of groundwater, the use of other means of irrigation should be increased. Like harvesting rain water, otherwise the results will not be good.
