Discrimination in fertilizer supply

June 29 2021

The concern of State Agriculture Minister Ravindra Choubey is justified on the delay in the supply of fertilizers. The ground reality is that most of the farmers of the state are able to take only one crop in a year. The life of the farmers is mainly dependent on the income from paddy. In such a situation, the direct impact of non-supply of chemical fertilizers will be on paddy production and its loss will have to be borne by the agricultural economy of the state. The issue of shortage of fertilizers and seeds in cooperatives has already been raised by the opposition.

The problem was already being expressed due to insufficient storage. Leader of Opposition Dharamlal Kaushik s claims may have merit that in view of the background of taking this issue seriously by the opposition in the monsoon session, the Agriculture Minister of the state has tried to blame the central government, but there is no doubt that Farmers will have to bear the ill-effects of all the disturbances.

The political leadership should seriously consider whether the neglect of the needs of the common people is justified in a democratic system. The availability of only fifty percent of the demand of urea, potash and phosphate by the state government for the Kharif crop is an invitation to the crisis. When compared with other neighboring states, the percentage of supply relative to demand in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh is said to be higher by fifteen to twenty percent.

Understanding the needs of the farmers, the leaders of the state should rise above party politics and try collectively in this matter. Agriculture Minister should also review whether timely initiative was taken for fertilizers? It should be expected that the request of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel will be seriously considered by the Central Government and the supply of fertilizers will be ensured as per the requirement of the state at the earliest.

The month of June is about to end and out of the expected 12 lakh tonnes, only six lakh tonnes of manure has been supplied. Somewhere behind this there has been a lack of communication. Under the federal system of the country, partisan behavior on the part of the central government is not expected. This cannot be called proper.

On the other hand, if the allegations do not have a true basis and such an attempt is being made only to hide their failure, then that too will not be correct. Such allegations and counter-allegations will send a wrong message to the public. It should be expected that the central and state government will solve the problem of fertilizer in better coordination and farmers will not face any kind of problem.
