Vet Varsity organizes workshop on ‘Climate change and animal production’

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana organized workshop entitled, ‘Climate change and animal production in Punjab’ under National Adaptation Fund on Climate Change (NAFCC) funded project "Toward Climate Resilient Livestock Production System in Punjab". Dr. JPS Gill, Director Research, GADVASU revealed that this project is a multi-institutional with total budget outlay of Rs.18 crores sanctioned in 2016. He informed that the project will be finished on 31, October 2022, under the guidance of Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor. He said that even after completion of this project the University will keep on organizing the livestock awareness camps and provide the information related to livestock production from time to time. Deans, Directors, Faculty Members and different Stakeholders graced the inaugural session.
Er. Pritpal Singh, Additional Director of Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh shared his views regarding the project. Sh. Davinder Kumar, NABARD Cluster Head Ludhiana Division, said that it is the largest project funded by NABARD in India till date, which involved different institutes in this project. Under the project climate controlled sheds have been constructed in the villages of TarnTaran, Bathinda and Ludhiana districts of Punjab and with this change in the sheds the diseases of the animals reduced and milk production of the animals has increased.
Dr. R.S. Grewal, Director of the Livestock Farms, acknowledged all the delegates for their contribution in this project especially Dr. SPS Ghuman, Co-ordinator of the project. Dr. L.K Dhaliwal, Professor Department of Agrometrology & climate change, PAU, emphasized on creating awareness about climate change to farmers and other stakeholders. Dr. Grewal informed that the construction cost of a shed for five animals is 2.25 lakh whereas for ten animals it is around 3.30 lakh.  He stressed that a facility is needed for farmers to save their animals for protection against heat stress. Dr. Puneet Malhotra, Dairy Manager, provided information regarding the weather linked insurance and temperature humidity index. India is the first country to launch weather linked insurance. Dr. Mrigank Honparkhe HoD, Veterinary Gynaecology shared information regarding the reproduction part of the project. Dr. Randhir Singh, Professor of Centre for One Health, shared his knowledge regarding disease forecasting and monitoring in the animals under this project.
