Ways to protect udder from swelling in cattle

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY: Effective managemental measures should be undertaken to protect the animals from occurrence of mastitis.

  • Udder and teats should be cleaned with warm water or diluted solution of potassium permanganate both before and after milking, care should be taken to keep the udder dry. Buffaloes should be milked with full hands.
  • Animals should also be protected from inclement weather. They should be milked in a clean and peaceful atmosphere as this affects the milk yield.
  • Milking in a dirty area not only adds to germs but also deteriorates the smell of milk.
  • Use teat dips after milking to keep the udder free from infection. In case mastitis occurs, a doctor should be immediately consulted.
