Advisory for horticulture crops

POTATO- Current season and weather is most ideal for land preparation and sowing of potato. Potato is mostly cultivated by planting tubers. Purity of the cultivars and healthy seed tubers are the primary requirements for a successful crop. The tuber seed should be disease free, well-sprouted and 30-40 g each in weight. It is advisable to use the entire seed tuber for planting. The whole or cut tubers are planted 15- 20 cm apart on the centre of the ridge at a depth of 5-7 cm and covered with soil. The seed rate of potato depends upon the season of planting, duration, seed size, spacing etc. The seed rate is 1.5-1.8 t/ha for round varieties and 2.0-2.5 t/ha for oval varieties.

ORANGE- Crop is now in fruit development stage. Apply post monsoon Bordeaux paste on the tree trunk. Weeding and harrowing operation should be done in the orchard. Prepare double ring system for irrigation.

GUAVA- Guava is now in maturity/harvesting stage in most of the places. Immediately harvest the ready to harvest fruits before it get fully ripen. In current weather and crop stage, fruit fly infestation is very high in guava. To control fruit fly, use methyl eugenol pheromone traps for trapping the flies in a trap containing 0.05 percent malathion mixed with orange juice in one liter of water.
