Advisory for Farm Forestry in the month of September
Suggestions for Farm Forestry are as follows:
Poplar : As the temperature has started decreasing, thus, irrigation should be given fortnightly instead of weekly interval. The caterpillars of Leaf Defoliator and Leaf Webber feed on leaves. Control the insects by collecting and destroying infested leaves. Autumn crop of sugarcane can be sown if the Poplar age is less than 3 years, however, maize/bajra sorghum can be taken as fodder at any age of the Poplar.
Safeda : It is the time to sow the seeds of Safeda on raised beds either by broadcasting or in lines 10 cm apart at a rate of 20 g/m2. Cover the beds with thatches and give light irrigation by sprinklers. The heavy irrigation may cause damping off disease. When seedlings attain height of 4-5 cm, transfer then in perfected polybags filled with a mixture of soil, sand and FYM (1:1:1). Transplant the seedlings in the fields which were sown in FebruaryMarch in pits of 50 × 50 ×50 cm. The pits should be filled with 50 % top soil and 50 % FYM
