Advisory related to sunflower crop for the coming days

Sunflower- This is the suitable time for sowing of long maturing crops such as sunflower.

  • Do the sowing on hedges and keep a distance of 2 feet between the seedlings and one foot between the plants.
  • Sow the seeds on south side of the hedge.
  • Apply 24 kg nitrogen (50 kg urea) and 12 kg phosphorus (75 kg single superphosphate) per acre in sunflower at the time of sowing.
  • Prefer single superphosphate for phosphorus as it also contains sulphur which is essential for sunflower.
  • In sandy soils apply half of urea at sowing and the rest at first irrigation.
  • If the potato crop is first applied with 20 tons of manure per acre, then apply 12 kg nitrogen (25 kg urea) to the sunflower crop.
  • If sunflower is to be sown after toria, then apply 10 tons of manure per acre in the field with recommended fertilizers.
  • Apply 20 kg muriate of potash on light and potash deficient land but give double the amount of potash in Ropar, Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur districts.
  • If sowing seems to be delayed till February, then sunflower can be cultivated with seedlings.
