Cultivation of elephant foot yam by leveled land and pit method

Generally, Elephant foot yam is planted during the February-March months. If seeds availability and irrigation facilities are ensured, then it can be cultivated throughout the year. In Chhattisgarh, its sowing is started in the month of May-June when there is rainy condition.

Planting method: Elephant foot yam is sown by two methods, the first is in leveled land and the second is the pit method.

  • In the leveled land method, the tubers are sown according to the size of the tubers by making a 20 to 30-cm deep groove with a spade at a distance of 75 to 90 cm and the groove is covered with soil.
  • In the pit method, tubers are planted by digging 75x75x30 cm or 1.0x1.0 meter 30 cm wide and deep pit.
