Cultivation of elephant foot yam by leveled land and pit method
Generally, Elephant foot yam is planted during the February-March months. If seeds availability and irrigation facilities are ensured, then it can be cultivated throughout the year. In Chhattisgarh, its sowing is started in the month of May-June when there is rainy condition.
Planting method: Elephant foot yam is sown by two methods, the first is in leveled land and the second is the pit method.
In the leveled land method, the tubers are sown according to the size of the tubers by making a 20 to 30-cm deep groove with a spade at a distance of 75 to 90 cm and the groove is covered with soil.
In the pit method, tubers are planted by digging 75x75x30 cm or 1.0x1.0 meter 30 cm wide and deep pit.
