Dr. Balwinder Singh Lakhewali is an Environmentalist and author who lives his passion every day. Presently, he is working as Project Director (ATMA) Moga -cum- Dy Director PAMETI, PAU Campus, Ludhiana (Agri. Extension), Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, since 2011. He has Fifteen years of experience in handling projects related to Agriculture and allied services like; food garden, landscaping, horticulture, agroforestry, social forestry, natural farming, pesticide free kitchen garden, wasteland development, etc. Dr. Lakhewali is actively involved in various social activities and is founder president of an NGO, “Natural Tree Foundation” (Regd.) which is working for conservation of trees and environment. He is working on establishment on seed bank named ‘GURU NANAK BIRKH BEEJ BANK’ at village Khosa Randhir (Moga) with the help of Religious Saint ‘Sant Baba Gurmeet Singh Ji’. He has worked on greenery at Golden Temple, introduced the concept of making mini forests under the name of BABE NANAK DI JHIRI, developed GURU NANAK BAGH, etc. He is also working on endangered and heritage tree species of Punjab since 2004. He has come up with ‘Lakhewali Model’ which is all about trees being planted according to spaces available in villages, religious places, schools, tubewells etc. He organises TREE WALK, nature walk in Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana & various green pockets of the Punjab. During Lockdown, Dr. Lakhewali in association with Apni Kheti Foundation, successfully completed 4 batches of 8-day online training course on “Landscaping and Home Gardening”. He is author of the various books like: “Birkhaan Baajh Na Sohndi Dharti”, “Shereni anusaar Rukhaan di Viontbandhi”, “Jaye Dharat Punjab De”, “Kheti Sahayaik Dhande”, etc. He is regular Columnist of Punjabi Newspapers: Daily Ajit and Punjabi Tribune. His more than 700 Popular Articles are published in Various Newspapers and Monthly Magazines related to Landscaping & Environment Conservation. Dr. Lakhewali is also part of FAO-TCP Project on “Strengthening Agriculture and Allied Sector Contributions to India’s National Biodiversity Action Plan (NBAP) 2008 and the National Biodiversity Targets (NBTs)” on “Mainstreaming Agro-biodiversity. He is proficient in design and development of complete landscape including landscape, irrigation systems, softscapes, and interior plantscapes.
